What to Wear to Your Maternity Photoshoot
So many of my clients have asked me what they should wear for their maternity photos. As a SoCal photographer in Orange County, California, many of my sessions are at the beach, but the following outfit inspiration can be applied anywhere! I have 4 basic guidelines to help you decide what to wear for your maternity photos:
1. Comfort
Seriously. There’s nothing worse than wearing an outfit that you’re constantly tugging at! Opting for a comfortable maternity outfit is honestly the best idea – if you’re not forced to think about your outfit during your photoshoot, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy your session.
Lacey’s dress was soft, stretchy, and something she would wear before and after her pregnancy.
2. Classic
Think simple necklines, materials and cuts that are flattering and will never go out of style. I would recommend avoiding super trendy clothing that you might look back on in 5 years and think, “Gosh, why did I wear that?!” A common mistake I see is wearing busy patterns and bright colors; they distract from the moments we’re capturing and makes it difficult to coordinate outfits with others who may be in your family photos. I have another tip on coordinating outfits later in this blog!
Esmeralda’s satin dress absolutely glows in the Southern California golden hour sun. Not to mention, it’s a post bump friendly dress!
She also accessorized with rings and a gold watch (above) – always a classy and timeless choice!
3. Neutrals
Wearing neutrals for your photoshoot helps let the focus of the images be on your beautiful faces, the stunning location (I’m biased towards Orange County beach photoshoot locations!), and it makes coordinating with your partner simple and easy.
4. Solid Colors
You will never go wrong with a solid color dress – a perfect option is a black maternity dress. It will always have a classic and simple aesthetic for your photos no matter the location.
Lauren’s dress had a slit she could pull down to show off her belly – it was the perfect outfit hack!
Feeling bold? Choosing a solid color dress in a muted shade will give you a beautiful pop. Make sure that the color coordinates well with your photoshoot location, props, and your partner’s outfit.
This powder light blue is so flattering on Ella, and she’s having a boy – the perfect color choice!
To sum it up, I highly recommend my clients opt for outfits that are comfortable, classic, and consist of neutrals or solid colors. If you need any help with what to wear to your maternity shoot, I’m always happy to help!
